Halloween is around the corner!  Costumes are being sold left and right and the streets will be filled with silly ideas, Disney characters and many others.  Hearing aids can be concealed or integrated to make stand out and creative costumes.  Whether your children want to conceal or show off their hearing devices, here are a few ideas to help get the creative juices flowing for this year’s costume creations!

Showing Off the Hearing Aids

Is your child interested in showing of his or her hearing aid?  Here are a few tips about how hearing aids can be decorated safely:

1)   Choose materials wisely

If you’re looking to bejewel or add some extra bling to hearing aids take care to choose stickers or stick-on additions that won’t damage the hearing aid.  Avoid using liquid glue or paint that may get into the hearing aid mechanism and damage the device.  If stickers leave any residue, carefully use rubbing alcohol for removal.

2)   Areas to avoid

When decorating hearing aids, avoid compromising or obstructing the microphone ports in any way.  Avoid using liquid glue or paint that is moisture penetrating and could potentially block hearing aid joints.

3)   I’m not crafty.  What can I do?

For those who don’t have time or simply don’t think they are creative enough, there are tons of resources available online to find headbands, clip on pieces and even removable decorations specifically designed to fit over hearing aids!  There are charms, jewels, superhero, minion and other awesome decorations that can be found on Etsy or Pinterest.

4)   Only Halloween?

In light of that, removable hearing aid décor don’t have to be limited to Halloween costume wear.  If your children want to make their hearing aids more enjoyable accessories instead of just a tool, these options give them the opportunity to do just that.  Be sure to consult with your audiologist to make sure that the decorations you are interested in or have won’t compromise hearing aid performance or have any risk of damaging the device.
