Hearing Aid Styles

Over-the-ear (OTE): Similar to the traditional behind-the-ear instrument, OTE hearing aids allow for patients to benefit from their natural hearing with emphasis in areas where hearing needs an extra boost.  OTE hearing aids have a small silhouette that rests over the top of the ear, utilizing a slim tube to transfer sounds into the ear canal.

Behind-the-ear (BTE):  BTE hearing aids are appropriate for all ages and all degrees of hearing loss.  The BTE hearing aid silhouette rests on the ear and uses a standard tube to transfer the amplified sounds into the ear canal.  The hearing aid is coupled to the tube which is attached to a custom-made ear piece that ensures adequate delivery of sound.

In-the-ear (ITE): ITE hearing aids fit into the ear canal and fill the entire outer portion of the ear.  All hearing aid components (buttons, volume wheels, microphones) are housed in one custom-made silhouette casing.

In-the-canal (ITC):  ITC hearing aids fit into the ear canal and fill only a portion of the outer ear.  All hearing aid components are housed in one custom-made casing that fits into the ear.

Completely-in-the-canal (CIC): CIC hearing aids fit completely in the canal and are extremely cosmetically appealing to patients.  CIC instruments work best for mild to moderate hearing losses.

 * Regardless of hearing aid style, custom-made ear pieces are typically used with all instruments due to patient comfort and satisfaction.
